caveatlector_09 asked me to write about these 5 things. If you would like me to give you 5 things to write about, leave a comment after this entry.
1. Best thing to cook in a hurry*glancing at empty bowl on corner of desk* Pasta. Definitely pasta. But fast doesn't have to be bland-- there's lots of tasty mixes of toppings that can be made and cleaned up after before the pasta even finishes cooking. I like to chop up some of the fresh basil I have growing in my room and some roasted red peppers with grated parmesan and a drizzle of nice extra virgin olive oil, then pour all that over cheese tortellinis. Another favorite, especially in summer, is fettucine with fresh basil and tomatoes, garlic, and brie cheese.
For comfort food in the winter, there's a tasty, hearty soup I love that's so easy and quick since nearly all the ingredients come from a can:
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 can cannelini (white beans)
1 can red kidney beans
2 cans vegetable broth
1 bag Barilla cheese tortellinis
Dump everything from cans into a big pot and heat to a low boil. Cook the tortellinis in broth, or separately if saving for leftovers. Top with grated parmesan.
I've also tried adding both escarole and bacon to this, both of which work nicely.
2. Birthday cake vs. massively delicious kittenSince (a) KITTENS ARE NOT FOR EATING, and (b) seriously, do you remember my birthday cake? I think the answer should be obvious.

3. Cures for insomnia- Tea. I'm particularly fond of Herbal Essences' Tension Tamer and Sleepytime, as well as chamomile. Also, green tea with honey and slices of fresh ginger root, though that should be decaf if you actually want help sleeping.
- Mentally vomiting into a stream-of-conscious, totally uncensored text file that gets deleted later on
- Reading a good book I've read before, so I don't have to pay attention too much
- Getting up and walking around for a little while
- Lucid dreaming induction/concentration exercises (mantras, self-hypnosis, and the like, plus thinking of interesting things to dream about, like 'Using water, sculpt an animal and bring it to life.')
- Bach or Mozart (I've got a Mozart for Midnight CD that's quite good)
- Cuddles and warm blankets
- And of course, there's always the pleasant option of finding someone willing to tire you out ;)
4. Who would win in a fight: physicists or chemists?By the time the physicists finished calculating trajectories and probabilities and constructing their doomsday device, the chemists would have them doused them with acid, or rendered unconscious (or otherwise incapacitated (ie, dead)) with lovely toxic fumes... seriously, all you need is ammonia and bleach, and BAM! Chlorine gas, baby! But the physicists would totally have way more fun with the plotting. Other than, ya know, the disfiguring acid burns and loss of brain function. The chemists, however, get to indulge in the celebratory ethanolic toast. This one's a toss-up.
Point of interest, according to the
SCQ Spring Science Showdown 2007, either Particle Physics or General Relativity will be facing off against d-Orbitals or Fossil Fuels. That ought to be quite the battle; personally I'm rooting for Gen Rel.
5. This one time in chorus practice.....Every year in high school, we'd sing the Hallelujah Chorus in our winter concert, which is such a fun piece to sing. One of the 'dramatic tension' points is about two measures from the end, where there's a massive fermata making a silent pause before the concluding notes. Anyways, at some point a tradition had emerged that at dress rehearsal during that pause, somebody had to whisper "scrambled eggs." I'm not sure where this came from, but it never got old.
